Solar Batteries: Lithium or Lead-Acid? A Buyer's Guide

Batteries give you power at night and during outages, but they are also the most expensive part of any solar system. So before asking “which battery?”, ask: do I need batteries at all?

Key takeaways

  • On-grid systems don’t need batteries to save money.
  • Lithium (LiFePO4) lasts 6,000+ cycles; lead-acid 500–1,500.
  • Lithium can be safely discharged to 90%; lead-acid is best kept to 50%.
  • True cost is cost per stored kWh over the battery’s life — where lithium wins.

When do you need batteries?

  • Frequent outages that cause losses (critical loads, clinics, cold stores).
  • Sites far from the grid (off-grid).
  • Wanting solar power at night where net metering isn’t available.

Head-to-head

Criterion Lithium iron phosphate Lead-acid (Gel/AGM)
Cycle life 6,000+ 500–1,500
Safe depth of discharge 90% 50%
Approx. lifespan 10–15 years 3–5 years
Maintenance None Moderate
Heat tolerance Good with a BMS Strongly affected
Upfront price Higher Lower
Lifetime cost per kWh Much lower Higher
6,000+cycles for LiFePO4
90%safe depth of discharge
3xlonger life than lead-acid, approx.

Sizing a battery

  1. List the loads you want during an outage and their power.
  2. Multiply by the hours of backup you need.
  3. Divide by the allowed depth of discharge.

Example: 2 kW of loads for 4 hours = 8 kWh. With lithium at 90% you need about 9 kWh of capacity.

Storage trends in Egypt and worldwide

Lithium battery prices have fallen sharply in recent years, and Egypt is adding large grid-scale storage. As prices fall, storage makes sense for more facilities, especially with hybrid systems.

Frequently asked questions

Can car batteries be used with solar?

Not recommended. Car batteries are built for short bursts of starting current, not repeated deep discharge, and fail quickly.

Are lithium batteries safe?

LiFePO4 is among the safest, most thermally stable lithium chemistries, especially with a good BMS and proper installation.
