How Much Space Does Solar Need on Roofs and Land?

How many square metres per kilowatt? A space guide for concrete roofs, metal roofs and ground mounts, and how shading and walkways change the maths.

How Much Space Does Solar Need on Roofs and Land?

Space is often what sets the maximum size of your plant, which is why the GPS calculator asks for your free area in square metres. But not every square metre of roof is usable; here’s how we work it out.

Key takeaways

  • A modern ~620 W panel measures roughly 2.7 m².
  • Tilted rows on concrete roofs need about 7–8 m² per kW because of row spacing.
  • Flush mounting on metal roofs needs about 5–6 m² per kW.
  • Shading, walkways and equipment are deducted from usable area.

Space by mounting type

Mounting Approx. area per kW Notes
Flush on metal roof 5–6 m² Highest density
Tilted rows on concrete 7–8 m² Spacing avoids row shading
Fixed ground mount 8–10 m² Walkways for maintenance and vehicles
Car-park canopies 6–7 m² Double use of space
2.7 m²approx. area of a 620 W panel
7 m²average per kW on a concrete roof
140 kWapprox. per 1,000 m² of metal roof

Why rows need spacing

Tilted panels cast a shadow behind them, especially in winter when the sun is low. We set row spacing so shadows don’t fall on the next row during the main production hours. See optimal tilt in Egypt.

What gets deducted?

  • Water tanks, stair rooms and satellite dishes.
  • Outdoor AC units and vents.
  • Maintenance walkways and edge clearances.
  • Areas shaded by neighbouring buildings.

What if space is short?

  • Choose higher-efficiency panels.
  • Use canopies and façades.
  • Accept partial coverage — it still pays off very well.

Frequently asked questions

Can panels go on pitched or tiled roofs?

Yes, with mounting systems designed for tiles and pitched roofs that preserve waterproofing.

Can I still use the roof after installation?

Yes. Walkways remain, and some designs raise structures to leave usable space underneath.
